in the good old summertime

Hey y'all!

I thought I'd take a break from playing catch-up in the garden to pop in and say hi.

No Spring clean-up last year + hardly any summer maintenance + very little fall clean-up = total chaos.

Dandelions and thistles and lots of grass in places that grass should not be.

My usual Spring schedule has me outside at least eight hours a day, and I was pretty bummed to discover that I don't quite have the energy back to pull off that kind of ambitious agenda. I was actually bragging to whoever would listen that I was back to 100%, but that was before I added outdoor chores to my life.

Dang!

But, there is light at the end of the tunnel, and I'm hoping to be totally on top of things within a couple weeks because this summer is totally going to make up for last summer.

BBQ's, parties, fun company coming to visit, hikes, trips to the farmers market, porch swinging, dock sitting.

Classic summer activities, but paired with a renewed appreciation for the gift of being alive to enjoy them.

To that end, I need your help.

I'm compiling the end all/be all summer playlist and I'd LOVE it if you would chime in with an all time favorite summer tune or two.

Songs that make you happy. Songs that make you feel the sunshine every time you hear them.

Any era, any genre.

Thank-you and have a happy Monday everyone!

  1. I was wondering how you were doing and how all the flowery yard work was going. Take it easy and don't over do it. I know it's tempting to get everything back to tip top shape but make sure you take care of yourself first.

Love the wall color in the last picture! You must share the name of it. It's fabulous!!!

    Songs:
    Happy - Pharrell Williams
Safe and Sound - Capital Cities
    Levels - Avicii
    Wake Me Up - Avicii
Life Is a Highway - Tom Cochrane (the original song)
    Paradise - Coldplay
    Viva la Vida - Coldplay

just a few to get you started! :)

  2. I am sorry that you don't have your energy back. It is frustrating. I don't have what I had before my heart surgery. But the only thing to do is keep going, right?

    As for songs. Hummmm.
What A Feeling from Flashdance always gets me in a good mood.
Plus anything from the Beach Boys.

  3. Woo-hoo, you posted! I love that little sitting area in front of the window, it is just so pretty. I am a rat pack kind of girl in the early evening with the twinkling lights on and a cool drink by my side. Give me a little Frank, Dino and Harry Bellafonte or Connick, Jr.) and I am completely mello and content. I can't wait to see what suggestions everyone else comes up with. I hope you share the list you come up with and lots of pictures of your gardens. So happy all is well!

  19. Oh. My. Goodness. That white edged lilac against all that turquoise loveliness too my breath away. I bought a bush of that but it never bloomed white edged, only old farm lavender lilacs. I need to try again. We have a lilac test garden north of Oregon and in Washington - every variety you could imagine. I almost missed the lilac bloom as we were at the coast for my birthday and they bloomed early. Happy music? "Don't Worry, Be Happy" by Bobby McFerrin. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  35. Thank you for this beautiful post, it seriously just made my day.

The songs we have on repeat in our van are these:

    - Best Day of My Life - American Authors (not the best singers but it's so catchy!)
    - Beautiful Day - Michael Buble (OK, I only knew the chorus of this song - which is so happy and bright! - up until a few days ago, and then I listened closer to the rest of the song Who would've thought it's about a guy dumping a girl! But it's a fun one anyway.)
    - Everybody, Ingrid Michaelson
    - Good Life, One Republic
    - This is a slower one, but it makes me oh so happy: "Seven Years" by Norah Jones
    - Mat Kearney has some good ones

I wish you the very best as you work with the strength you have and will gain back. I had a cancerous tumor removed in October and it left my leg very weak and the muscles have become very atrophied. I start physical therapy tomorrow to regain some of that leg strength back. I also just did some flips on the trampoline for the first time today while my kids cheered for me. This whole experience sure has changed the way I look at things nowadays.

Anyway, I hope the rest of your summer is delightful and triumphant as you regain strength AND your gardens back!

  36. Hi Teresa!
I just noticed your post in my bloglovin' feed & decided to click over & get caught up on anything I missed! MAN! I definitely missed some stuff!

I'm so sorry to hear about your breast cancer diagnosis & your lousy summer last year! My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004, and I watched her battle it with everything she had. It was a long & difficult journey, but she is alive & well today! Almost been in remission 10 years now!!

I'm so happy to hear that you are doing so well & that you had such a good prognosis!! I hope you have a wonderful summer this year & make-up for everything you missed out on last year! You deserve it girl!! ((Hugs))

p.s. that wig halo thing was the coolest thing I have ever seen!! Definitely filing that one away!

p.s.s. your photos are gorgeous as always! :)

  49. Hi, your Lilacs are gorgeous! Love them paired with the aqua. Glad to hear that you are back out there, even if you don't have your old strength back yet. I love gardening and continue to do it, even though it tuckers me right out. Truly mental therapy for me! When summer comes I can't help but think of the song, "Dancin in the Streets". I remember having outdoor dances when I was young and how much fun they were.
